Better Git Charles Mingus in Your Soul

Although he never had a hit record, Charles Mingus (1922 – 1979) was the greatest jazz composer after Duke Ellington. Mingus played with everyone from Kid Ory to Hamiet Bluiett, stopping at virtually every stylistic moment in the history of jazz. All of this history was always alive in his music. We’ll watch some rare concert footage of Mingus bands as well as an extraordinary film from 1981, Stations of the Elevated, in which Mingus’s music plays a crucial role.
“Scenes Through the Cinema Lens” is a film retrospective focusing on the performing arts curated by Krin Gabbard, professor of Jazz Studies at Columbia University. He is also the author of Better Git It in Your Soul: An Interpretive Biography of Charles Mingus and Hotter than That: The Trumpet, Jazz, and American Culture.
