City Drinks Mt Sky

New York City has developed the largest publically-owned, unfiltered water supply system in the world. Based on equal parts human ingenuity and the eco-system services of the Catskill Mountain forest, this system provides clean water to nine million downstate NY residents. Utilizing puppet theater’s elemental devices of enchantment, CITY THAT DRINKS THE MOUNTAIN SKY traces life’s quintessential liquid from those mountain tops to city taps. The original production premiered in 1999 and has become a perennial favorite in our repertoire, with over 600 performances at venues throughout the region.

Building on that success, CITY: PART TWO picks up where the original production leaves off and explores new challenges facing NYC’s water supply —- major infrastructure repair, complex watershed management decisions, and the unfolding effects of a changing climate. As the narrator concludes, NYC’s Catskill-based water system is “…an experiment to see how these mountains can continue to be home for mountain residents and, at the same time, provide clean water to the city that will drink the mountain sky for hundreds of years to come.”  Arm of the Sea Theater.
