Part 1 Jazz Forum: Remembering Woody Shaw Friday, May 16th @ 7:00 pm - Free Humanities Program Video Documentary filmed at Jazz Forum and panel discussion with Woody Shaw III/son and Mark Morganelli/Owner. Moderated by Willard Jenkins. @ 8:30pm - Concert Victor Lewis - Musical Director Performers: Sean Jones, trumpet; Ryan Kisor, trumpet; Victor Lewis, drummer; Larry Willis, pianist; David Williams, bass Jazz Forum opened at two locations, Cooper Square 1979-1981 and 648 Broadway from 1981-1983, and were operated by trumpeter/presenter Mark Morganelli. Jazz Forum was instrumental in preserving the genre. From 1979 to 1983, recordings, videos, films, and radio broadcast documented the work of several musicians. |

Part 2 Jazz Gallery: Remembering Betty Carter and Joe Williams Friday, May 30th @ 7:00 pm - Free Humanities Program Film footage on Betty Carter and Joe Williams moderated by Willard Jenkins @ 8:30pm - Concert Norman Simmons - Musical Director Featuring Vanessa Rubin and Allan Harris Norman Simmons Trio Jazz Gallery was owned by Joe and Iggy Termini and opened in 1959. Prior to opening the Jazz Gallery, the Termini brothers opened the Five Spot in the mid ‘50s. Their strong commitment to jazz showcased such musicians as John Coltrane, Gil Evans, and Joe Williams. @ 8:30 pm - Concert Harvie S - Musical Director Dancers Roxane Butterfly and Max Pollak and guest appearance of Jane Goldberg and Tina Pratt. Performances by Harvie S Trio with special guest Phil Woods The last club will be Jazzmania Society, which opened in 1978 by saxophonist Mike Morgenstern. Jazzmania presented an annual Brazilian jazz festival as well as introducing the first jazz and dance, “Jance.” |
