Scenes through the Cinema Lens Presents

Trumpet Stories

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

This program features great jazz trumpet soloists such as Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Lee Morgan, Wynton Marsalis and more.  We will also sample the strange history of the trumpet as represented in Hollywood films such as Young Man With a Horn (starring Kirk Douglas), Mo’ Better Blues (with Denzel Washington), and Born to Be Blue (with Ethan Hawke).

“Scenes Through the Cinema Lens” is a film retrospective focusing on the performing arts curated by Krin Gabbard, professor of Jazz Studies at Columbia University.  He is also the author of  Better Git It in Your Soul: An Interpretive Biography of Charles Mingus and Hotter than That: The Trumpet, Jazz, and American Culture.
